Allegheny County Councilman Bob Macey cited his ability to work well with colleagues and for constituents as keys to his re-election victory on Tuesday.

Mr. Macey, a Democratic incumbent, beat Republican challenger Kenneth Peoples by a nearly 2-1 margin in the county's 9th District. The unofficial vote count was 8,260 to 4,343. He has served on council since 2006.

Council will have 10 Democrats and five Republicans when it reorganizes in January.

"In the campaign I talked about my background and my accomplishments and my vision," Mr. Macey said. "Those are all things I can be proud of."

Mr. Macey said his top goal in his next term would be encouraging economic development in the Monongahela and Youghiogheny valleys and supporting measures to cut crime.

"What I would like to do is work with colleagues on council, state representatives and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald to grow the Mon Valley and to repair and maintain our roads and bridges," he said after the votes were counted. "We all have a burning desire to make this region a destination of choice for businesses and families."

Mr. Macey, 64, lives in West Mifflin. A graduate of McKeesport High School, he was a steelworker for almost 15 years at U.S. Steel's Duquesne plant. After the mill closed, he earned an associate degree in business management from Community College of Allegheny County and qualified as a state-licensed damage appraiser.

Until his retirement, Mr. Macey worked for Century Heritage Federal Credit Union in West Mifflin as director of business development and community relations. He has four grown children and is divorced.

Mr. Peoples, 41, lives in White Oak. He works as an emergency medical technician for White Oak EMS and Jefferson Hills Area Ambulance Association. He also sells real estate through the Howard Hanna Wilson Baum office in McKeesport.

The part-time council position pays $9,000 per year.

Communities in District 9 are Dravosburg, Duquesne, Elizabeth Township, Forward, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln, McKeesport, North Versailles, Port Vue, South Versailles, Versailles, West Mifflin and White Oak.
