A man was sentenced to eight to 16 years in prison this morning after pleading guilty to shooting his brother to death earlier this year.

Andre Rankin, 37, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the April 13 death of Dearto Dion Rankin, 39, of Verona.

Deputy district attorney Simquita Bridges said Andre Rankin showed up at a Linden Avenue apartment where his brother was sleeping about 8:30 that morning.

The defendant entered his brother's bedroom waving a gun around and ultimately was escorted out of the apartment by Dearto Rankin, Ms. Bridges said.

Dearto Rankin's fiance then heard the two men arguing and a shot.

When she looked into the hallway, Dearto Rankin had been shot in the chest.
