The warden's secretary at Bedford County Prison stole more than $50,000 in cash since 2008, state police said.

Sheila J. Suter, 64, of Bedford was arrested Friday on a felony theft charge, according to court documents.

Warden David Kessling noticed that checks and money orders were being deposited, but not cash, state police said.

The money was received from "intakes" or incoming inmates and placed in a lock box. It was Ms. Suter's job to take the money from the box to be deposited at First National Bank, state police said.

State police said Bedford County was victimized, not intakes or inmates, as Ms. Suter would reimburse or credit inmates' accounts from the First National account.

When interviewed by state police, Ms. Suter said she had taken the cash.
