This is what K. Douglas "Doug" Cole knows for sure: He no longer is Monroeville police chief.

What he is unsure about is his new rank.

"I've been demoted," the former chief said in an interview this morning. "I know I'm still a police officer and a supervisor. I won't know anything until Monday."

The former chief was demoted Friday without public explanation by interim Manager Lynette C. McKinney, capping a turbulent 48 hours in the municipality. A news release she sent out said the former chief was "removed 'without cause.' "

Acting Chief Steven Pascarella said that his former boss would revert to his most recent union position.

"As of Monday he will go back to his last held union rank, which is sergeant," Chief Pascarella said.

On Wednesday former manager Jeffrey Silka resigned after a bloc of council members issued an ultimatum, telling him to dump the chief or be ousted. Mr. Silka, who said he was told that the majority of council had no confidence in the chief, refused to comply.

The former chief today said he had received a demotion letter from Ms. McKinney but declined to reveal what it said. He acknowledged that he has a contract with the municipality but would not provide details.

Chief Pascarella said he was promoted temporarily while a search is conducted for a full-time chief. He said he did not know if the search would include both internal and external candidates.
