The Forbes Regional Campus of the West Penn Allegheny Health System is expanding its emergency department.
Plans call for the addition of eight examination rooms and one mental health room in the Gerald McGinnis Emergency Department at the Monroeville hospital.
Thicker mattresses, brighter colors and TVs in every exam room also are planned.
The project, costing $1,044,000, will raise the number of beds in the department to 38.
Work is expected to be finished by December.
The emergency department was renovated in 2006. It currently features 29 private, acute care examination rooms. More than 45,000 people are treated there every year.
The high volume of patients at Forbes Regional is expected to increase because UPMC Braddock closed in January.
