Health care workers at the Allegheny County Jail will hold an informational picket this afternoon in the courtyard of the county Courthouse, according to a news release from the United Steelworkers.
The workers, who are employees of the Brentwood, Tenn.-based Corizon Health Inc., will call for increased staffing.
“Our chief concern is sufficient staffing that allows the health-care providers to deliver the care that the inmates need,” said Randa Ruge, an organizer for the United Steelworkers, which represents health workers at the jail. Corizon took over jail health services a year ago.
The workers are asking the county Jail Oversight Board to take action in regard to staffing levels.
“Corizon Health is confident that we are providing sufficient staffing levels to meet contract and patient care requirements,” said company spokeswoman Susan Morgenstern in a statement.
The protest event will begin at 3:15 p.m. The Jail Oversight Board will meet at 4 p.m. inside the Allegheny County Courthouse.
