A 17-year-old from Garfield died Thursday night after being shot multiple times in the torso near his home in Nelson Mandela Peace Park, said Sonya Toler, city public safety spokeswoman.

Police were called around 7:45 p.m. to Broad and Evaline streets for a report of shots fired, she said. There, they found a man shot, but alive, in the playground area, Ms. Toler said.

Naytel Pack was transported to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m., a spokesman for the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said.

The city homicide unit is investigating.
