How much does Pittsburgh benefit financially from its sports facilities and development on the land around them?
That's what Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak wants to find out.
Ms. Rudiak introduced a bill this morning that would authorize Controller Michael Lamb to conduct an audit of the Sports & Exhibition Authority and the Stadium Authority. Ms. Rudiak said she is gathering information and has no hidden agenda behind the bill.
"I go to meetings with the public all the time and people ask me how much we benefit from the stadiums and sports teams and I really don't have an answer," she said.
The bill calls for the audit to be completed by Sept. 30 and will look at such things as amusement taxes, property taxes and usage fees paid as a result of events at the venues and development of the land.
The SEA oversees the operation of Consol Energy Center, Heinz Field and PNC Park. The Stadium Authority oversees development of the land between the football and baseball stadiums.
