The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, whose waiting list for Section 8 vouchers had been cleared and closed since 2010, has started a new one, an open lottery for the housing choice voucher program. It will take up to 5,000 applicants.
The application period begins at 8 a.m. today and closes at 11:59 p.m. May 11.
“Pittsburgh families are in dire need of affordable housing options and re-opening the HCV Waiting List should provide relief to the thousands of individuals struggling to find an affordable place to call home,” housing authority executive director Caster D. Binion said.
“As rental prices continue to rise and the city’s stock of affordable housing becomes increasingly scarce, HACP anticipates that up to 20,000 applications will be submitted for the lottery,” according to a statement from the housing authority.
The applications will be taken only at www.hacp.org.
