The mother of Michael Schaab, the man killed during gunman John Shick’s 2012 rampage at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland, Friday sued several people and entities in connection with his death.
Attorney Michael O’Day filed a 75-page complaint in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court on behalf of Mary Schaab of Greensburg.
The defendants are University of Pittsburgh Physicians, the University of Pittsburgh, the estate of John Shick, Am-Gard Security Inc. and the gunman’s mother, Susan Shick.
The suit makes various allegations against the defendants, including that some should have done more to provide better security at Western Psych while others should have involuntarily committed the schizophrenic Shick to a mental institution when he became threatening and displayed signs of aggression.
Shick walked into the Oakland psychiatric hospital March 8, 2012 and shot six people including Michael Schaab, wounding the other five, before being fatally shot by police.
Schaab, 25, was a milieu therapist at Western Psych.
The suit largely echoes one filed by attorney Mark Homyak against numerous defendants on behalf of Kathryn Leight, a receptionist at Western Psych who was seriously wounded and is still undergoing surgeries as a result of the incident.
Correction (March 8, 2014): A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the lawyer handling John Schick's estate as one of the defendants in the suit filed by Mary Schaab.
