It was a long time coming, but Hazel Marie Attenborough Cichowski of the South Side, who will turn 103 on Saturday, now has an honorary high school diploma.

At the school board meeting tonight, Pittsburgh Public Schools made the presentation to the former student, who dropped out of South High School in the 11th grade because she needed to go to work during the Great Depression.

Ms. Cichowski told the board: "I really loved school. It was never a chore for me."

While she said it was sad to quit school, she said she also loved her job and "always made the best of the situation."

She worked for 45 years at West Penn Hospital.
