New or expecting mothers who receive food stamps and their children could get $20 in free produce at local farmers markets, Allegheny County officials said Thursday.

Women who are pregnant or are new mothers and their children younger than 5 years old can get checks for the free produce at their next appointment with the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Food Program. The checks can be used through Nov. 30 at the 63 participating farmers markets and farm stands, which are listed at www.achd.net/wic.

Those who don't want to wait until their next appointment can pick up the checks by visiting their WIC office on these dates: Wilkinsburg, Mount Oliver and Downtown, today; Turtle Creek, Wednesday; and McKeesport, next Friday.
