A jury today found Oakland pharmacist Raymond J. Zareck, 56, guilty of possessing a gun while being a felon and while being a drug abuser, both of which are federal crimes.
The 12-member jury's verdict came a week after the beginning of trial in which federal prosecutors said that the years-long presence of a Remington Model 870 shotgun in Zareck's home showed that he possessed it. Zareck's attorney had argued that the shotgun was owned by the defendant's brother, who lived in South Carolina.
Zareck pleaded no contest to felony drug charges in 1989, and guilty to similar charges in 1990. His recent legal woes began in 2009, when Homestead police stopped him and he swallowed the narcotics with which he was caught.
U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti oversaw the trial and will impose sentence on March 15.
