The city of Pittsburgh's annual tree giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

About 1,000 dogwood saplings will be given away during the fourth annual event, which complements the celebration of Earth Day on Friday. The trees will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis at the Grant Street portico of the City-County Building.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl created the giveaway with the goal of aiding the regional TreeVitalize initiative to plant 20,000 trees by 2012. A person doesn't have to be a city resident to get a tree.
