East Liberty church choir places 2nd in national contest

Saturday night in Detroit, the Remnant Choir of from East Liberty's Mt. Ararat Baptist Church won second place and a total of $15,000 in the Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound competition.

Atlanta West Pentecostal Church Choir won the national competition designed to find the "Best Church Choir in America." The competition had its final round Saturday in the Joe Louis Arena.

The Remnant Choir, led by conductor Trini Massie, took second place, winning a $15,000 check.

Last month, the Remnant Choir won an earlier round of the competition in Washington, D.C. taking a total of four prizes, including the People's Choice Award, and $16,000 for its church. The choir has primarily sung the 19th century hymn "Blessed Assurance," in an arrangement by Fanny Crosby, in the competition.
