A North Braddock mother who told police she left her 3-year-old twins unattended before a fatal fire began in their home was sentenced Monday to three to six years in jail, plus five years of probation.

Dalawna Berran-Lett, 33, appeared in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court for a sentencing Monday morning before Judge Edward Borkowski, according to the district attorney’s office.

Berran-Lett pleaded guilty in December to two counts each of involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment, in connection with the Jan. 4, 2013, deaths of her sons Ky’heir and Dy’heir Arthur.

Berran-Lett told police she left the boys unattended at about 2:45 p.m. while she went to find her 15-year-old daughter, who she believed stole marijuana from her. She returned to find her rented Rebecca Street home on fire.

Police said the boys had taken a rack of ribs out of the freezer, put it on the stove top and turned on the back burner. The blaze, investigators said, began in the kitchen.
