A little more than a year after financial woes forced West Penn Allegheny Health System to close the emergency room at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, plans call for reopening the facility on Tuesday, officials announced this morning.

The region's largest insurer, Highmark, is in the process of infusing resources into WPAHS as it moves to acquire the health system. Highmark has committed $475 million to stabilize the region's second largest health system and is awaiting regulatory approval on an affiliation agreement.

Since the insurer's announcement in June of the planned acquisition, officials have said they'll be restoring many medical services to the Bloomfield campus.
