The former president of the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department will be arraigned today on charges he embezzled more than $5,000 from his organization.

Chester Yurkovic, 56, of Findlay, joined the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department in November 1996 and became its president a year later.

As president, the affidavit said, Mr. Yurkovic was in charge of the Monday bingo cash collections, as well as some fundraisers.

According to the affidavit, Mr. Yurkovic would steal cash out of the bingo and fundraiser proceeds, and replace it with checks that had been written out to the department as donations. Detectives said Mr. Yurkovic kept the checks on hand so that he could use them to balance out deposits when necessary.

Investigators believe Mr. Yurkovic stole $5,779 from the department.
