Allegheny County officials have released the name of a man who died when an SUV collided with his tractor trailer on the outbound Parkway West near Montour Run Road in Moon this morning.
John Tepke, 48, of Jeannette, died at the scene of crash, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
The outbound highway was closed until about 4 p.m., when one outbound lane was reopened.
A woman was driving a GMC Terrain in the right lane when she lost control shortly before 9:45 a.m., entered the berm, tried to regain control and instead collided with a tractor-trailer that was in the middle lane, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Robin Mungo said.
The tractor-trailer driver hit a barrier, lost control and then hit a guiderail and flipped, winding up on a slope off to the right of the highway.
The truck driver died at the scene of the crash. The SUV driver was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition, Trooper Mungo said.
Police had little immediate information about why the SUV driver initially hit the berm of the road.
“What she was doing — that is to be seen,” Trooper Mungo said.
The closure of the outbound lanes forced drivers, including those heading to Pittsburgh International Airport, to use alternate routes. All outbound traffic was being forced to exit at Route 22/30. The detour is via U.S. 22 west and U.S. 30 west to a right at Clinton Road to return to the parkway.
