#ChampionsForChildren: Nearly 350 supporters of the Homeless Children’s Education Fund made their way to the Rivers Club, Downtown, Monday night for the 18th annual Champions for Children benefit dinner. The event featured a cocktail reception with a silent auction and buffet dinner before the main program and presentation of awards. George Szymanski was given the Volunteer of the Year Award, and Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Maurita Bryant received the Linda A. Dickerson Award. Ray and Kathy (she was unable to attend) Buehler were honored with the Champions for Children 2017 award for their mission to create hope through learning for homeless children. Many are teenagers who leave home because of neglect or abuse. The guest speaker, Grace Enick, was a former homeless teen. She talked about what the HCEF meant to her. Among those applauding were event chairs Linda and Fred Episcopo, HCEF founder Joe Lagana, HCEF director Carlos Carter, board president Joe Zewe (with Laura), John Lovelace, Dione Cahillane and her daughter Adrienne, Chris Kush, CCAC president Quintin B. Bullock, Mayor Bill Peduto and Bob Fragasso.
