The Place: A hidden gem on the North Shore, the Left Field Meeting Space, dazzled roughly 125 guests with its spacious rooftop deck overlooking PNC Park on Thursday night, as partygoers mingled with good food and drinks, bid on the silent auction, and basked in the sun while listening to John Gresh’s Gris-Gris band. #SEENLifeIsGood.
The Purpose: The Cancer Caring Center, now in its 27th year, is a local organization that provides a variety of free services to cancer patients and families. “There isn’t a single family that walks into the CCC that doesn’t walk in better for it,” said Cindy Bandula-Yates. A lesser-known addition to the center is a small food bank (partner of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank). Rebecca Whitlinger, executive director, realized that people were coming in to the center for services, and she could hear stomachs growling, only to learn that many were choosing between food and medicine. “The CCC is a Pittsburgh charity that helps our neighbors. All funds raised here, stay here, to help those with cancer and their families not only survive, but thrive,” she said. “They do amazing things with next to nothing,” added Gina Pferdehirt.
The People: Cancer survivor Cecelia Marano (who was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in December) said that she was frightened and shocked when she received the news. “Rebecca reached out to me through a mutual friend and immediately connected me to a counselor and other services.” Supporter Jeffrey Smith has been involved with the event for 10 years. “Anything I can do to help this wonderful organization, I am happy to do it.” Want to get involved?
