More than 320 guests gathered at the Fairmont Pittsburgh for the annual Leaders for Literacy Luncheon: Overcoming the Odds on Wednesday.

KDKA-TV anchor Ken Rice introduced Joe Pepe, president of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council has a direct impact on the Pittsburgh community and the Post-Gazette is proud to share its goals,” said Mr. Pepe, who served as honorary chair of the event.

After lunch GPLC’s board president Jackie Hogg, executive director Donald Block and GPLC student voice Patrick Sykes said a few words and thanked supporters. Guest speaker Mawi Asgedom engaged the audience with his journey from a Sudanese refugee camp, poverty and tragedy to his graduation from Harvard. He went on to write eight books including his teen success guide, “Nothing Is Impossible.”
