Starting Tuesday, the Buhl Planetarium at the Carnegie Science Center on the North Shore will be closed for 2 1/2 weeks for a major upgrade.

Workers will be cleaning and repainting the dome, reupholstering the seats, installing carpet and LED lighting and upgrading the sound system. The planetarium is scheduled to reopen Sept. 22.

The upgrade is being funded with part of $1.4 million raised by grants from The Grable Foundation, Allegheny Technologies, PPG Industries Foundation and private donors. The rest of the money will support a new exhibit, "SpacePlace," which opens Nov. 16.

During the planetarium renovations, the center's SkyWatch sessions will continue on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting) for $1 per person. Visitors should call 412-237-3327 the day of these sessions for stargazing times.
