Chatham event aims to foster sustainable food

The public is invited when, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Chatham University holds Food in Our Neighborhoods, described as "a networking and educational event to foster sustainable communities around food."

Sponsored by Chatham's Master of Arts in Food Studies program and School of Sustainability and the Environment, the gathering features morning workshops, a locally sourced lunch, and exhibits featuring cooks, chefs and community groups.

"We've got a tremendous gathering of community groups, growers, purchasers and more," says Chatham spokesperson Fiona Fisher, who says attendees will consider "new ways to foster local food enterprises, developing and strengthening community partnerships."

The concurrent workshops are "Groceries, Health and Economic Viability for Inner City Communities" with Glenn Ford of Praxis Marketplace, and "Tasty Treasures: Food Tours of Pittsburgh's Historic Neighborhoods" with Sylvia McCoy ('Burgh Bits and Bites), Mary Miller (The Fork and the Road), Sherris Moreira (Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area) and Gabe Funaro (History & Landmarks Foundation).

All events are in the Athletic & Fitness Center and Dilworth Hall on the Shadyside campus; admission is free but lunch is $10; 412-365-2498 or chatham.edu/foodinourneighborhoods.
