The kvass is ready

You can check out the head of the kvass tonight at East End Brewing Co. This unusual "bread beer," based on the Russian beverage that's also made with rye bread, debuts tonight during "growler hours" from 5 to 7 p.m. at the brewery on Susquehanna Street in Homewood.

The beer will be available on tap at several other outlets "by Monday at the latest," says brewer Scott Smith.

He will hold a brewery open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 4. For $20, you get food, a pint glass and the chance to try the kvass and a half dozen or more other East End beers. All the money goes to PLEA, or Programs for Living, Education, and Advocacy, a nonprofit that supports more than 300 families of children with developmental and behavioral challenges. A taste of cider, too

It's a regular "free beer tasting," but at tomorrow's they're going to be offering tastes of cider at Sudsy's Beer Store on Washington Pike in Bridgeville. From 4 to 6 p.m., you can sample several varieties of Woodchuck Draft Ciders, which are made with apples and other fruit and champagne yeast by Green Mountain Beverage in Woodbury, Vermont.

Available flavors include Granny Smith, Amber, Dark & Dry and Pear. The store's phone is 412-221-8081.

Halloween theme

At 3 Sons Dogs & Suds on Perry Highway in Pine, tonight's free tasting has a Halloween theme: From 6 to 8 p.m., you can try three Reaper Ales, which are made by Green Flash Brewing Co. in Vista, Calif.

The spooky brews are named Mortality Stout, Redemption Red Ale and Deathly Pale Ale. Next Thursday they continue the theme of "beers that will haunt you" with a tasting of Lucifer, Pendle Witches Brew, Black Cat, Skullsplitter and Biere du Boucanier (call 724-940-7667).
