Liquid science: Quantum Spirits distillery bubbling in Carnegie

Sarah and Ryan Kanto’s plan to open a distillery on Main Street in Carnegie took a big step forward in early October when the still was delivered.

The owners of Quantum Spirits (https://quantumspirits.com) have announced their first product — a single-malt rye vodka — and are taking email pre-orders. She said on Dec. 13 that the first bottles are awaiting labels and limited bottle sales will begin just before or right after Christmas. Meanwhile, “We have opened the calendar to start booking private events/parties for 2018.” Contact them by emailing sales@quantumspirits.com. Whiskey and other aged spirits will take longer to finish but are eventually to be a part of the Canonsburg couple’s portfolio.

He’s a chemical engineer in the energy industry, and she worked as a charitable volunteer before they started remodeling the sprawling first floor at what was once a bakery at 230 E. Main St. Early next year they plan to hold a grand opening of the tasting room, called Triple Point, a nod to thermodynamics as well as Pittsburgh’s rivers. Work is continuing in that and the production/lab space.

“Until we have two spirits, we are just going to do bottle sales with limited hours out of our tasting room and a few private parties,” Mr. Kanto said. “When we do open for real in 2018, we should have some great experiences for the science nerds out there who happen to be craft spirits enthusiasts.”
