Chenin Blanc has long been one of my favorite white grapes. Although the all-time great ones come from France's Loire Valley, South Africa long ago adopted the grape, which is called Steen there and is today the most-planted grape in that country. Some of the best hail from Stellenbosch. For a wonderful treat try:
Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc, 2011 -- PLCB #46057, $14.99
A powerful nose of guava and lime zest and a mouthful of passion fruit finishes with tart grapefruit. The crisp acidity accompanies a creamy texture that shows some subtle oak-derived spice.
The wine is only available at the One Oxford Centre (Downtown) and Bethel Park Wine & Spirits stores.
