Every day we seem to hear another story of people with an illness who don't have insurance and face financial disaster. Why don't the people in other countries have this problem? The health insurance debacle between UPMC and Highmark should illustrate the reasons to everyone -- private health insurance.
Other countries provide health care through socialized medicine that is paid for by tax and is half the cost of ours in most cases. How can this be? I can't give the specific reasons except that I have asked people from other countries about their health care systems and they were satisfied.
Why not subcontract our military, police, firefighters, schools, courts, highways and railways to insurance companies? The answer is pretty obvious: It would not work -- and it doesn't with health care either.
