Oakland Catholic sweeps in WPIAL volleyball playoff debut

Oakland Catholic made its playoff debut Wednesday night in the WPIAL Class AAA girls tournament and came away with an impressive victory. The top-seeded Eagles swept Chartiers Valley, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18, to advance to the quarterfinals.

"It's a very exciting time for our program to be in the playoffs for the first time," Oakland Catholic coach Karisa Haslett said. "It's a whole different ballgame in the playoffs, and the girls did a great job."

Oakland Catholic was led by Suzanne Gloekler, who had 17 kills, and Rachel Pohlod, who had 12 kills. The Eagles will face Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals tonight at a site to be determined.

Mt. Lebanon, the No. 4 seed, earned its fifth semifinal berth in six years with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 26-24, 21-25, 15-13) victory against No. 5 Pine-Richland. Caroline Grattan led the Blue Devils with 21 kills.

In other quarterfinal matches:

• Hopewell, the top seed and defending WPIAL Class AA champion, earned its fifth semifinal berth in six years by sweeping No. 8 Elizabeth Forward, 3-0. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Gabrielle Stala, and Mackenzi Woolsey each had seven kills for the Vikings.

• Mars, the No. 3 seed in Class AA, dominated No. 11 South Fayette, 3-0, to earn its second semifinal berth in four years. Abby Matusik led the Planets with 11 kills, while Jaden Zimmer added 10.

• Greensburg Central Catholic, the top seed in Class A, earned its third semifinal berth in six years by sweeping No. 9 Chartiers-Houston, 3-0. The Centurions were led by Shannon Hurley's 11 kills and Alexa Kacin's 20 digs.

• Bishop Canevin, the No. 3 seed in Class A, advanced to the semifinals for the third consecutive year with a 3-1 victory against No. 6 Riverview. Ashley Grimm led the Crusaders with 12 kills, while teammate Katie Oliverio had 23 assists.

• Fox Chapel, the No. 3 seed in Class AAA, advanced to the semifinals for the first time in school history with a 3-0 victory against No. 11 Upper St. Clair.
