TEAM TO BEAT
Woodland Hills -- What else is new? The Wolverines are two-time defending WPIAL champions and haven't lost a regular-season game in three seasons. They might not be as strong at the start of the season, but if their offensive and defensive lines come together, another WPIAL title could be on the horizon. Senior receiver-defensive back Devon Lyons (6-3, 205) has dozens of Division I scholarship offers. Senior quarterback Dennis Sellman (6-4, 210) threw for more than 1,300 yards last season. Senior Steffan Brinson (6-1, 190), who transferred from Ambridge in the middle of last season, is ready to assume the star halfback role. Sophomore defensive back Darrin Walls (6-1, 170) could be a star of the future.
CONTENDERS
Penn Hills -- Pitt recruit Anthony Morelli (6-4, 210) is back for his fourth season as the Indians' starting quarterback. With Morelli, junior running back Kenny Lewis (6-0, 180), junior receiver David Harvey (6-1, 163) and senior receiver Joe Prokopik (6-3, 185), the Indians' skill positions are second to none. Harvey averaged 34.7 yards on 25 catches last season. But the offensive line is a major question mark.
Baldwin -- First-year coach Mike Silianoff inherits some talented players. Senior running back Fred Bacco (5-10, 205) rushed for 1,468 yards, senior offensive guard Nick Laugelli (5-11, 260) was all-conference and senior tackle Ben Iannacchione (6-4, 290) is a West Virginia recruit.
Central Catholic -- The Vikings don't have a star player, but still enough talent to make the playoffs. Senior Adam Sciulli is one of the WPIAL's best kickers.
THE OTHERS
Hempfield -- First-year coach Bo Ruffner takes over a team that has won only four games in three seasons. Senior fullback-linebacker Mike Marvis (6-2, 230) is a Maryland recruit.
Connellsville -- First-year coach Andy Robertson has six offensive and five defensive starters returning, including senior center-defensive lineman Brad Firestone (6-4, 230).
Norwin -- Coach Tim McCabe believes his team can challenge for a playoff spot. Senior offensive lineman John Krohe (6-5, 290) is a Division I prospect.
