TEAM TO BEAT
Freeport -- There isn't an overwhelming favorite to win the conference, but Freeport has the makings to be the top team. The main reason is senior quarterback Luke Westerman, who was first-team all-conference a year ago. Westerman completed 78 of 148 for 1,103 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Senior Jake Scott (6-0, 180) led the team in receptions with 20.
CONTENDERS
Burrell -- Although Coach Tom Henderson has only one returning starter on offense, many coaches still pick the Bucs as one of the top teams in the conference. That lone returning offensive starter is senior quarterback Zak Jenniches (6-2, 190), who completed 65 of 131 for 1,010 yards.
Apollo-Ridge -- With five starters back on offense and defense, the Vikings should be a serious challenger for a playoff spot. David Dailey is a lineman to watch.
Mars -- Eighteen seniors are gone from last year's WPIAL finalist, but the Planets should still be in the thick of the playoff race. "We're going to have to learn quick and try to limit mistakes," said Coach Scott Heinauer. Senior Zach Rosswog (5-11, 170) is in his third season as a starter. Senior center-linebacker Tim King (6-2, 215) and senior two-way tackle Sean Roche (6-3 1/2, 305) could make waves.
THE OTHERS
Ford City -- Can senior quarterback J.J. Bartolovic (6-0, 195) lead Ford City to a playoff spot?
Deer Lakes -- First-year coach Denny Fedigan came over from North Catholic, and he inherits senior linebacker Jeremiah Miller (6-0, 190), one of the conference's best defensive players.
North Catholic -- New coach Rich Piccinini said "the excitement and enthusiasm level is high" with his team. But the Trojans have only four returning starters on offense and defense.
Shady Side Academy -- Shady Side Academy was 2-8 last year, but Coach John Cappa expects this team to be much better. Brody Nasse returns at quarterback and A.J. Brungo at running back.
