Player of the year
NATHAN NERY
Moon
Pitcher-first baseman, Sr.

2003 All-Section Baseball Teams

Nery pitched sparingly as a junior, but he added 27 pounds since last year and blossomed into the WPIAL's premier player as a senior. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth round of the major-league draft, but has not decided whether to sign with the Orioles or play college baseball at Stetson University (Fla.). Nery, a 6-foot-4, 212-pound left-hander, led the WPIAL in wins and strikeouts during the regular season. Including a playoff victory, he was 10-0 with 130 strikeouts in 63 innings. He allowed only 37 hits and had a 1.22 ERA. He was also among the WPIAL leaders in several offensive categories and finished with a .458 average (33-72), five home runs, 30 RBIs and 11 doubles.

Neil Walker
Pine-Richland
Catcher, Jr.

Considered one of best juniors in the state. Major-league scouts like him because he's a 6-2 1/2, 200-pound switch-hitting catcher. Batted .489 with five home runs. Hit .600 as a sophomore. Is trying out for the USA Junior National team.

Kevin Ricciuti
Ellwood City
Pitcher-shortstop, Sr.

One of most successful pitchers in WPIAL history. Had 31-3 career record. Was 12-1 this year with 132 strikeouts for WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion. Won five postseason games. Batted over .400. Will play next season at Akron.

Adam Dobies
North Allegheny
Pitcher-first baseman, Sr.

Dobies led North Allegheny to WPIAL Class AAA championship. Was 8-1 with a 1.31 ERA. Had 60 strikeouts in 59 innings. Batted .392 with eight doubles, seven home runs, 26 runs and 31 RBIs. Will play at Marshall University.

Warren Schaeffer
Greensburg CC
Shortstop, Sr.

Hit better than .500 in each of three varsity seasons (missed sophomore year with a knee injury). Has 101 career RBIs. Batted .554 this year with 22 RBIs, five doubles, three triples and three home runs. Has signed with Virginia Tech.

Adam DiMichele
Sto-Rox
Pitcher-outfielder, Jr.

Three-sport standout. In baseball, was 5-0 with two no-hitters and 50 strikeouts. Allowed only five runs. Also batted .420 (16 of 38) with six home runs and 20 RBIs. Excellent QB in football and point guard in basketball.

George Neiman
Shaler
Outfielder, Sr.

Helped Shaler to the WPIAL Class AAA title game. Had a school-record .506 batting average (41 of 81). A three-year starter, he set a school record for doubles this year with 13 and had 25 RBIs. Will play at Division I Ball State.

Jim Gallagher
Peters Township
Outfielder-pitcher, Jr.

Excellent center fielder who helped Peters Township to best season in school history. Hit .472 with 12 doubles, five home runs, 34 RBIs and 33 runs. 4-3 as a pitcher with 2.72 ERA. Has tryout for USA Junior National team.

Dale Mollenhauer
Pine-Richland
Shortstop, Jr.

A starter since his freshman year, Mollenhauer batted .536 (30 of 56) this season with 21 RBIs and 22 runs. Has good power, but also is an excellent fielder at shortstop. A number of Division I colleges are interested in him.

Dave Meldrum
Peters Township
Pitcher-shortstop, Sr.

Meldrum was talented enough to make all-section as a shortstop and pitcher. Was 7-0 as a pitcher with 1.55 ERA. Also hit .470 with five home runs, 28 RBIs and 26 runs. A four-year starter. Will play at Division II Mansfield.
