The Red Hurricanes wasted little time asserting their muscle in the section opener last night at Pine-Richland as they routed the Rams, 70-47. New Castle (6-0, 1-0) led 20-9 after one quarter.
New Castle and Pine-Richland (1-5, 0-1) were section co-champions last season. Dom Joseph led New Castle with 22 points. Dante Spino added 15 and Leon Ward 12.
Bill Zopf and John Skender scored 17 points each for Pine-Richland.
Boys' basketball
Peabody 49, Oliver 39: The defending champion Highlanders (3-2, 3-0) are the only team without a loss in the City League, and they got 12 points from Isiah Dunning. Oliver (3-2, 2-1) was led by the 20 points of Dominic Moriarty, who made five 3-pointers.
Brashear 97, South Vo-Tech 63: Mike Miller's 28 points led the Bulls to a win against the Orioles in the City League. Brashear (3-3, 2-1) held a 53-26 lead at halftime. Antoine Gaines was the top scorer for South (1-5, 0-3) with 21.
Shady Side Academy 57, Riverview 49: Fritz Woelfel's 25 points led the Indians (2-3, 1-0) past the Raiders (3-2, 0-1) in Class AA Section 4. Tom Sochacki added 18.
Blackhawk 45, Hopewell 38: Blackhawk (4-2, 1-0) got 16 points from Ryan Evanochko in Class AAA Section 2. Hopewell (3-2, 0-1) was led by Matt Fontana's 14 points.
Sto-Rox 67, Canevin 51: Kellen Kyles' 26 points led the Vikings (4-1, 1-0) past the Crusaders in Class AA Section 3. Sean Foley led Canevin (2-4, 0-1) with 24 points.
Moon 59, Ambridge 56: Ryan Helfrich scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to led the Tigers (3-3, 1-0) past the Bridgers (4-2, 0-1) in Class AAA Section 2.
Monessen 83, Greater Works Academy 44: The Greyhounds (4-2, 1-0) got 29 points from Brandon Jackson and 24 from A.J. Jackson in Class A Section 3 to defeat Greater Works in its first WPIAL league contest.
Wilkinsburg 73, Avonworth 38: Chris Cox and Jamar Sheffey scored 18 points each for Wilkinsburg (4-0, 1-0) in a romp against Avonworth (1-4, 0-1) in Class AA Section 4.
Girls' basketball
Upper St. Clair 56, Peters Township 44: The Panthers remained unbeaten with a triumph in its Class AAAA Section 5 opener over Peters Township (4-2, 0-1). Upper St. Clair (4-0, 1-0) was led by Kyra Kaylor's 15 points. Jamie Allenbaugh added 14.
Oakland Catholic 83, Penn Hills 32: Meg Bulger's 25 points led the Eagles (4-1, 1-0) to an impressive win against Penn Hills in the Class AAAA Section 4 opener. Eve Pyle added 20.
Woodland Hills 42, Fox Chapel 28: The Wolverines (6-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten with a Class AAAA Section 4 victory against the Foxes (1-5, 0-1).
Schenley 64: Carrick 21: The Spartans (4-2, 3-0) got 21 points from Carmen Bruce and 15 from Brittany Jackson to rout the Raiders (1-3, 0-1) in City League Section 1.
Westinghouse 40, Allderdice 32: Westinghouse (5-3, 2-0) snapped a two-game losing streak. Britney Gibson's 20 points led the Bulldogs to victory against the Dragons (3-2, 0-1) in City League Section 1.
