WPIAL Classs A Roundup: Clairton crushes Chartiers-Houston, 35-0

Underdog Chartiers-Houston threw a scare into Clairton in the 2012 season opener before losing by two points to the Bears.

Preseason No. 1-ranked Clairton did not have to go through that anxiety this season in its Black Hills Conference opener Friday at home against the Buccaneers.

The four-time reigning PIAA Class A champion won its state-record 64th consecutive contest, routing Chartiers-Houston, 35-0.

Lamont Wade scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 13 yards.

Ryan Williams caught a 27-yard scoring pass from Aaron Mathews. Mathews also scored on a 30-yard reception via a pass thrown by Wade, a freshman.


North Catholic 22, Apollo-Ridge 21 (2 overtimes)

Jerome Turner's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion run gave the WPIAL fourth-ranked Trojans a double-overtime win against the Vikings in an Eastern Conference contest at Stone Field in North Park. Turner led all rushers with 84 yards on 10 carries.

Sto-Rox 42, Shenango 0

The No. 2 Vikings coasted to a home victory in the Big Seven Conference as Lenny Williams passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Williams also scored on a 9-yard run. Williams has 5,859 career passing yards, seventh best in WPIAL history.

Avonworth 33, Rochester 6

The visiting Antelopes surprised No. 5 Rochester in non-conference action. Moses Giles led Avonworth with 132 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Avonworth outgained the Rams, 293-110.

Laurel 40, S. Side Beaver 6

Josh Dando rushed for 158 yards and scored two touchdowns in leading the host Spartans to a rout of South Side Beaver in the Big Seven Conference.

Beth-Center 47, Mapletown 0

The host Bulldogs routed the Maples in the Tri-County South Conference. Anthony Welsh led Beth-Center with 169 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Carmichaels 36, Jefferson-Morgan 0

The host Mikes outgained the Rockets in total yardage, 441-120, in a Tri-County South opener.

Our Lady Sacred Heart 20, Union 0

The Chargers blanked the Spartans in a Big Seven Conference game at Robert Morris University. Billy Mulcahey scored twice on 1-yard runs.

Monessen 40, California 0

The Greyhounds were led by Clintell Gillaspie's 173 yards rushing in a Black Hills Conference contest at California. Javon Brown added 126 yards on the ground. Brown also caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Noah Rullo.

Frazier 81, Geibel 0

The host Commodores led, 47-0, after one quarter as the final score was also the halftime score in this Tri-County South contest.

Fort Cherry 46, Carlynton 31

Fort Cherry and host Carlynton scored points in every quarter with the Rangers prevailing in this Black Hills Conference game. Koltan Kobrys led Fort Cherry with 215 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Brentwood 49, Serra 7

Host Brentwood led, 35-0, at the half in Black Hills Conference action against the Eagles. Pat Carr led Brentwood with three touchdowns.

West Shamokin 12, Springdale 7

Adam Lock's 2-yard fourth-quarter return of a fumble recovery gave the Wolves an Eastern Conference win at Springdale.
