It was New Castle's third win this season against its Section 3 rival. The two moved up in class this year. This marked only the ninth time in WPIAL history that two teams played each other in the championship game two years in a row.

New Castle (26-0), the No. 1 seed, became the first team to go undefeated through a WPIAL season two years in a row. The Red Hurricanes also won the WPIAL championship with a 26-0 record last season.

Antonio Rudolph scored all 15 of his points in the second half for New Castle, which also got 12 points from Anthony Richards.

Ryan Luther led No. 3 Hampton (21-5) with 17 points.

New Castle led, 15-10, after the first quarter and outscored Hampton, 21-12, in the second quarter to take a 36-22 halftime lead. New Castle made seven 3-pointers in the first half, four by Richards. He and Anderson finished the half with 12 points apiece, while Luther had 10 for Hampton.

The Red Hurricanes extended their lead to 20 after three quarters, and the teams began pulling their starters midway through the fourth.
