The Post-Gazette goes up close with this season's best boys.
DeJuan Blair, Player of the year
College: Has signed with Pitt. Other top choices:Kansas State, Indiana and Tennessee.
The skinny: Only second player in the past 22 years to make Fabulous Five three years in a row (other was Blackhawk's Brandon Fuss-Cheatham). Blair is ranked by some scouting services as one of the top 50 players in the country. This season, averaged 16.2 points and double figures in rebounds. Finished career with 1,563 points.
What was the key ingredient in winning the PIAA title? Our juniors, Deandre Kane and Greg Blair [DeJuan's brother]. They came through in the clutch, more than we thought.
Favorite place to eat: Shogun [Japanese Steak House] in Monroeville.
Favorite TV show: The Jamie Foxx Show.
What actor would play you in a movie: Mike Epps.
Something, or someone, that bothers you (pet peeve): Control freaks.
Last artist/song you downloaded: "Diamonds On My Chain" by Lil' Wayne.
People might be surprised to know that you ...: I'm a giving and caring person. I'm free-hearted.
College: Signed with New Mexico State last November after also making official visits to Texas, Maryland and Oklahoma. Also considered Pitt and Memphis. Committed to Pitt during his sophomore year, but reopened his recruiting a few months later.
But Pope's basketball future is uncertain after he was shot four times at a party in Aliquippa this past weekend. He is in UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital, recovering from the gunshot wounds.
The Skinny: Ranked by some scouting services as one of the top 30 players in the country. Is big enough to play underneath, but also has agility and ballhandling ability to play on the perimeter.
Pope played three years at Aliquippa after playing his freshman year at Montrose Christian Academy in Rockville, Md. Scored 1,568 points at Aliquippa and helped Quips win the past two WPIAL Class AA championships.
As a senior, Pope averaged 19.7 points, 11 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.3 steals and 2.3 blocks. He also shot 58 percent from the field.
Note: Due to his recovery from the shooting, Pope was not available to answer questions.
College: Has not made a decision. Plans to visit Virginia Tech and possibly Xavier. Georgia also is starting to show interest.
The Skinny: Has good size for a guard and excels at driving to the basket. Made Fabulous Five as a junior and senior. This season, helped Schenley win its third consecutive City League championship and first PIAA title since 1978. Led team in scoring at 17.2 points. Scored 1,422 career points.
What was the key ingredient in winning the PIAA title? I think one was all the starters being from the same neighborhood [Hill District]. We had good team chemistry.
Favorite place to eat: Golden Corral in Monroeville.
Favorite TV show: ESPN's SportsCenter.
Something, or someone, that bothers you (pet peeve): People who just hate others and don't want to see others succeed in life.
Last artist/song you downloaded: Lil' Wayne.
Last movie you saw/rented: "Norbit" (with Eddie Murphy).
People might be surprised to know that you ...: Had straight A's in school last semester and my grade-point average overall is better than 3.0.
College: Pryor also is a standout quarterback-defensive back in football and is being recruited heavily in both sports. Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan and dozens of others have offered scholarships for football. Pitt, Penn State, Connecticut and Miami are among the teams that have offered for basketball.
The skinny: Two scouting services have named Pryor the No. 1 junior football player in the country. But he also is talented on the basketball court. In basketball this season, he averaged 20.8 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks a game for the WPIAL Class AA runner-up. Has 1,658 career points.
How many times a day do you get asked what college you'll pick? Probably about 10. It gets annoying sometimes.
Text messages you receive a day from colleges: Probably 40-50.
What actor would play you in a movie: Chris Tucker.
Something, or someone, that bothers you (pet peeve): People that talk on the field or the court, and don't show any actions. They don' t back it up.
Last movie you saw/rented: "Godfather I".
People might be surprised to know that you ...: Had a 3.4 grade-point average the past nine weeks.
College: Only a junior, but has a scholarship offer from Marquette. Also a football prospect and has offers in that sport from Pitt, Penn State, Michigan and Miami, among others.
The skinny: An athletic forward and excellent leaper. Averaged 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals a game. Shot 51 percent from the field. Helped team win WPIAL Class AA championship and second-place finish in the PIAA tournament. Has 1,408 career points.
How will the team recover from losing the PIAA title game? A lot of people believe we won't do much next year because a lot of players will be gone. But we're going to come back harder than ever.
Favorite place to eat:Quaker Steak & Lube.
Favorite TV show: The Wayans Bros.
What actor would play you in a movie: Chris Tucker.
Something, or someone, that bothers you (pet peeve): I don't have one. Nothing really bothers me.
Last artist/song you downloaded: Gucci Mane.
Last movie you saw/rented: "Ghost Rider."
People might be surprised to know that you ...: I'm smart.
