The Slipper Orchid Collection at Phipps Conservatory has been named for Barbara Tisherman, founder of the Slipper Orchid Alliance and its president.
In a shout out to local orchid expert Barbara Tisherman, Phipps Botanical Garden and Conservatory in conjunction with the Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania has announced that it will name the Slipper Orchid Collection at Phipps in her honor. The Barbara Tisherman Slipper Orchid Collection will be a resource for hybridizers and botanists to study hybrids dating from 1859, as well as rare species.
Phipps and the Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania are hosting a Super Slipper Celebration today with national and international speakers, followed by an evening of touring, food, entertainment and the official presentation/naming of the Barbara Tisherman Slipper Orchid Collection.
In addition, Olaf Gruss, a German botanist, named a new paphiopedilum hybrid for her.
Ms. Tisherman was the founder of the Slipper Orchid Alliance and is its president. This international organization is dedicated to the lady slipper group of orchids and promotes broader understanding and conservation. She is known locally for her many lectures and for her extraordinary exhibits at the annual Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania shows.
The honor recognizes her extensive contributions to education about orchid culture and quality, her service to the American Orchid Society and to its local affiliate, the OSWP, and to the worldwide orchid community.
