Jurors deliberating the fate of Dr. Cyril H. Wecht yesterday asked for copies of the sections of the U.S. Code under which the former Allegheny County coroner has been charged.
U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab denied their request after attorneys from both sides agreed that jurors should rely solely on the judge's lengthy and detailed instructions, which were given Monday.
Dr. Wecht is charged with 41 offenses involving wire fraud, mail fraud and theft from an organization receiving federal funds.
Closing arguments and jury instructions lasted all day Monday, and the jury of six men and six women began deliberating Tuesday.
They are scheduled to meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except Fridays, and if deliberations extend to next week, they will not convene Monday.
Yesterday's request marked the first word from the jury, which heard 44 government witnesses over 22 days of testimony.
