Funds were created yesterday to help the families of the young Amish girls shot in their school on Monday and for the three young children of the gunman.

The Nickel Mines Children's Fund will benefit families of the victims. Donations can be sent to that fund in care of the Coatesville Savings Bank, Paradise, PA 17562.

Penn State Hershey Medical Center spokesman Sean Young said the hospital was working with the Amish families to try to ease their grief, and they asked the center to have concerned people send their contributions to the bank.

Mr. Young said the medical center "has been inundated with well-wishers and people who want to support these Amish families,'' who in general do not accept funds from outside their close-knit community.

Donations to the second fund, called the Roberts Family Fund, can be sent to the same bank, Mr. Young said.
