Judges and courtroom staff may view five years of criminal court documents online, Allegheny County Clerk of Courts George F. Matta II has announced.

Mr. Matta's office was expected to finish by today loading the Criminal Division documents onto the court's computer system. They are from more than 91,000 criminal cases filed in the county from 2001 to the present.

A $70,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development paid for the digital imaging and data entry project, a joint effort of the clerk of courts office and two private companies, IMR and Ditto Document Services, both of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Matta said the project will save taxpayers thousands of dollars by eliminating the need to put documents on microfilm. It also will make records retrievable electronically in courtrooms.
