Plum youngster wins contest with radical rice

Thursday, August 10, 2000

By Nancy Anderson, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

Anthony Verzinskie of Plum found out that he was the Grand Prize winner in French's Taste Toppers (French fried onions) "Crunch When You Munch" recipe contest in a very modern way.

"They left a message on my answering machine," said the 8 1/2 -year-old boy. "I was thrilled. We're having a limo come for us at 9:45 in the morning!"

Since all recipes had to be titled in alliteration, Anthony chose to call his hearty main dish "Make Regular Rice Radical."

"It was easy to make, and we eat it for dinner sometimes," said the third-grader, who attends Center Elementary School in Plum. He developed the recipe with his mom, Theresa.

He will meet the press at noon today at Peter Kump's New York Cooking School to talk about his winning entry and to sample some of the recipes in a new "Cooking With Kids" cookbook.

His mother will go with him to New York City for four all-expenses-paid days of fun. They'll stay at the Helmsley Hotel in Manhattan.

"We plan to do as much sightseeing as possible," Theresa said, "the Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, whatever will be beneficial for him when he goes back to school."

Anthony has his own agenda.

"I want to see the New York Yankees play," said the trophy-winning first baseman with the Plum All-Stars, a division of Little League.

This fall he will enter the Minor League for two years, and he is thinking about a career in baseball.

According to his mother, who works in the City-County Building Downtown as a tipstaff for the Allegheny Courts, he's a big help in the kitchen.

"We like to do the Cooking with Kids recipes in the Post-Gazette," she said. "He also enjoys grilling outdoors with his dad."

Anthony's favorite foods are steaks, hamburgers and hot dogs, but he said his mom's ribs are pretty good.

His dad, Norman, and younger sister, Christine, 4, are also going to New York City, but 9-month-old Vinnie is staying home -- not alone.

Anthony read about the contest in the Nibbles column in the Post-Gazette.
