Connecticut designer Jessica Kagan Cushman's Nantucket bracelets have a lot to say. Inspired by whale tooth scrimshaw (an art form sailors used to pass the time while waiting for Moby Dick), Ms. Cushman's resin versions feature sayings rather than whaling scenes. The daughter of renowned furniture designer Vladimir Kagan, she was raised with a certain aesthetic and learned scrimshaw from her father. She did make a few in rare, antique ivory, which are much more expensive. The resin cuff is sold for $170 and the bangles are $130 each.
"We'll Always Have Paris," "You Can Agree With Me or You Can Be Wrong," "After All ... Tomorrow Is Another Day" or "Off With Her Head" are just a few of the colorful comments you can wrap around your wrist. Among the celebrities spotted wearing the wordy adornments are the Black Eyed Peas' Fergie, Helen Mirren, Patrick McMullan and Paris Hilton.
They can be personalized on the inside with a maximum of 25 characters for an extra $35. To order or see the entire collection, go to jessicacushman.com. They are sold in Pittsburgh at Hair by Damian, 5713 Centre Ave., Shadyside, 412-661-7000.
