What you should know: This is the new action-driven Superman movie, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and, as his biological and adoptive fathers, Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner. It runs 143 minutes and is being shown in regular 2-D or pricier 3-D, which requires glasses be worn throughout.

Language: The abbreviated word "f-ing" is used along with a few mild four-letter words.

Sexual situations and nudity: A woman is shown in labor and then gives birth in a discreet scene. Clark Kent is shirtless in a scene or two, and a few kisses are shared.

Violence/scary situations: Pretty much from beginning to end with widespread death (usually implied, not shown) and destruction, a school bus that plunges into water and temporarily traps children, fires, explosions, imprisonment, helicopter crashes, exchange of gunfire and use of bigger, deadly weapons that put everyone on Earth at risk, physical fights in which blood is drawn, a sea of skulls, and what appears to be the death of a character.

Alcohol and drug use: A scene is set in a bar where adults are drinking.
