University of Pittsburgh students, staff and others are being asked to join peers on campuses nationwide Friday in a symbolic tribute to those victimized by Monday's bombing near the Boston Marathon finish line, officials announced today.

Members of Pitt's Student Government Board plan to lead the campus community in taking five laps around the Cathedral of Learning beginning Friday at 4:30 p.m., university spokesman John Fedele said.

The act is in response to members of the Boston College community who have said they will walk the last five miles to the marathon finish line in Boston and have encouraged campuses across the nation to demonstrate their support through actions of their own.

Members of the public are invited to take part,

So far, Mr. Fedele said, about 300 people have signed up for the Pitt event at the Facebook events page.
