Willem Dafoe has been cast in "The Fault In Our Stars," which is filming in and around Pittsburgh through Oct. 6.

Writer John Green tweeted "Casting news: Willem Dafoe (!!!!) will play Peter Van Houten in The Fault in Our Stars movie. #TFIOSmovie," while director Josh Boone, also making the announcement via Twitter, wrote "Dafoe stars in several of my favorite films including The Last Temptation of Christ, Born on the Fourth of July, and Platoon."

Shailene Woodley plays Hazel Lancaster and Ansel Elgort is Augustus "Gus" Waters in the adaptation of the popular Green novel about teens coping with cancer.

In "The Fault In Our Stars," Van Houten is the author of "An Imperial Affliction," Hazel's favorite book. She shares the book with Gus, and they determine to go to Amsterdam to meet the writer.

Local actor David Whelan, most recently onstage in Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre's "Don Juan Comes Back From the War," has been cast as Gus' father, while Laura Dern and Sam Trammell of "True Blood" portray Hazel's parents.

The Wrap notes that Mr. Dafoe has four high-profile releases on the horizon, including Scott Cooper's "Out of the Furnace," which was shot in Western Pennsylvania; Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel"; Anton Corbijn's "A Most Wanted Man"; and Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac."
