The National Energy Technology Laboratory, a division of the U.S. Department of Energy, has confirmed that Anthony Cugini is no longer serving as its director and that Scott Klara has taken his place.

Mr. Cugini was based in NETL's South Park campus.

Mr. Klara, who was deputy director until this week, was named acting director "on an interim basis," NETL spokeswoman Shelley Martin said.

Employees were notified on the company intranet on Wednesday that Mr. Cugini was on leave, but there was no further explanation.

Ms. Martin said the department can't comment on personnel issues.

NETL comprises three research and development laboratories, in Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Oregon. With an annual budget of about $819 million, its mission is to develop technologies that would enable fossil fuels to be utilized cleanly and efficiently.
