Of UPMC's 55,000 employees, 26 received at least $1 million in total compensation last year, led by president and CEO Jeffrey Romoff at $6.07 million, followed by executive vice president Elizabeth Concordia, who received $2.5 million in salary, bonuses, retirement and other compensation, and neurosurgeon Ghassan Bejjani, whose compensation was $2.48 million.
The salaries of top executives and physicians are part of a tax return that nonprofit organizations must file with the IRS yearly by May 15 and make available to the public. UPMC already provides quarterly updates on its finances, recently reporting a drop from $290 million in fiscal 2012 to $146 million in operating income for the most recent July-March period, so most of the attention with the IRS filing focuses on the compensation of top executives.
Compensation for Mr. Romoff -- who received $5.98 million in salary, bonuses and benefits in fiscal 2011 -- included $958,992 in base salary, $2.93 million in bonus and incentive compensation and $1.75 million in retirement and other deferred compensation in 2012 as head of the region's largest employer and health provider network. By comparison, more than 15 executives of publicly-held companies in the tri-state region earned more in total compensation than Mr. Romoff last year.
Other notable UPMC executives and their total compensation packages include chief information officer Daniel Drawbaugh, $2.24 million; Greg Peaslee, senior vice president and chief of human resources, $2.12 million; thoracic surgeon James Luketich, $2.02 million; UPMC Health Plan president Diane Holder, $1.91 million; neurosurgeon Richard Spiro, $1.86 million; orthopedic surgeon Mark Rodosky, $1.82 million; Victor Morrell, chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery at Children's Hospital, $1.74 million; and Charles Bogosta, president of UPMC's international and commercial services division, $1.64 million.
