Some PNC customers still struggling during attacks
Customers of PNC Bank continued to report problems accessing their accounts online Monday, the fifth week in a row that the Pittsburgh-based bank's website has been buffeted by an apparent cyber attack. Although the "vast majority" of customers are able to log in, steps PNC has been taking to fight the attack may have blocked some customers from using the site, the bank has said. PNC was unable to predict when the problems might end, spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said Monday. Customers having trouble were urged to keep trying or to call 1-888-762-2265.
Entrepreneurship fund will offer $300,000 total
Six startup companies will split $300,000 in early-stage financing from the Open Field Entrepreneurs Fund at Carnegie Mellon University, the school announced Monday. The fund, created in June 2012 by CMU alumni and Flip Video Camera creator Jonathan Kaplan and his wife, Marci Glazer, will provide $50,000 in matching investment to the following companies: ActivAided Orthotics, Aurochs Brewing Co., PECA Labs, Pixite, StatEasy and Tunessence. Five of the companies are headquartered in Pittsburgh and Pixite is in San Diego. The Open Field Entrepreneurs Fund has helped finance 16 startup companies since its inception.
Average gas cost here rises about 2 cents
The cost of gasoline in Western Pennsylvania went up about 2 cents this week, with the price of an average gallon of gasoline hitting $3.514. A comparable gallon nationwide cost $3.263, according to GasBuddy.com. The local price is still down about a nickel from where it was one month ago.
Federal Reserve taps local executives for posts
The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland appointed U.S. Steel CEO John Surma a director. At the Cleveland Fed's Pittsburgh branch, Glenn R. Mahone, partner at the law firm Reed Smith, was reappointed chairman of the board while Pittsburgh Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant was reappointed a director. In addition, PNC Financial Services Group CEO James Rohr was reappointed to a one-year term as the Cleveland Fed's representative on the Federal Advisory Council.
Private equity firm acquires Chromalox
Irving Place Capital, a New York private equity firm, has acquired Chromalox, a Pittsburgh company that makes commercial and industrial heating products, from Sentinel Capital Partners. Terms were not disclosed.
Downtown Partnership gets $350,000 grant
The Colcom Foundation has awarded a $350,000 grant to the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership for use in its Paris to Pittsburgh program, which provides aid to Downtown property owners for facade improvements. This year, projects expected to be completed under the program include 901 Penn Ave., Nicky's Thai Kitchen at 604 Liberty Ave., and Cafe Milano at 134 Sixth St.
