The West Penn Allegheny Health System has filled two key positions with the announcement that two prominent UPMC cancer surgeons will be joining its ranks in coming months.
Howard Edington, chairman of the Department of Surgery at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and surgical director of the UPCI Melanoma Center, will move to WPAHS to be chairman of surgery for the five-hospital system in August.
Blair Anderson Jobe, director of esophageal research and esophageal diagnostics and therapeutic endoscopy at the UPMC Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute, will head the department of surgery at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield beginning June 30 and also will head a new multi-disciplinary institute for the treatment of esophageal and thoracic diseases there.
Dr. Jobe said he was drawn by the opportunity to establish a "one-stop shop" where patients can come for all of their care related to those diseases, but he is also excited about being part the pending Highmark-WPAHS affiliation and its effort to make health care delivery more efficient. "This is a unique opportunity."
The affiliation is under state regulatory review.
