The West Penn Allegheny Health System has laid off 262 employees and eliminated another 200 vacant positions.

Spokesman Dan Laurent said Friday the reductions "span every level of the workforce, but relatively few are related to direct patient care."

He described the action as "right-sizing the organization based on the patient volume we currently have."

Mr. Laurent added that no other "significant" reductions are planned for now.

The layoffs did not affect the two other Allegheny Health Network hospitals: Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills and St. Vincent Hospital in Erie.

Following Friday's layoffs, the West Penn Allegheny Health System will have 10,300 employees while the Allegheny Health Network as a whole employs nearly 17,000.

Earlier this week, WPAHS eliminated some executive leadership positions, including that of Ned Labaucher, CEO of Allegheny Valley Hospital and executive vice president overseeing Allegheny Valley and Forbes Regional.

Also leaving the health network, in a move unrelated to the layoffs, is Chief Financial Officer Daniel Lebish, who has accepted a position as chief operating officer for one of Aflac's two national business units in Columbia, S.C.

Prior to his tenure with Allegheny Health Network, Mr. Lebish served with a variety of Highmark subsidiaries and, before that, worked for HealthAmerica, now Coventry Health Care. Also on his resume is a term as vice president of administrative services at Magee-Womens Hospital, now part of the UPMC network.
